Ningbo is situated in the centre of the coastline of China mainland, the south wing of the Changjiang (Yangtze) River Delta, the most developed region in China. It is next to Hangzhou Bay in the north and faces Shanghai. Ningbo is next to Hangzhou City, the capital of Zhejiang in the west, making a golden triangle with Shanghai and Hangzhou. The city occupies an area of 9,365 square kilometers and the total population is 5,560,000.
Ningbo is a city integrating long history and culture and modem fashion vitality.
The history of Ningbo dates back to "the culture of Hemudu" 7,000 years ago. In the past it was called "Yin" and "Mingzhou". In Ming Dynasty it was changed into Ningbo according to the definition of "If the sea is stable (calm) (ning) and the wave (bo) will be quiet." and now we still use it. Ningbo has been an important port of Chinese and foreign trade. As a famous Chinese historical and cultural city, Ningbo has a long business convention and numerous intellectuals.
After China has carried out the policy of opening-up, Ningbo became one of the first group of open (opening) cities and vice province-level (sub-provincial) planning solely enlisted city. The economy is developing fast with vitality, changes are taking place everyday, and people are leading a rich life. A modernized international port city is more and more radiant.
The four seasons are clear and the mountains and rivers are beautiful in Ningbo. As one of the first group of excellent tourist cities in China, at present Ningbo has nine AAAA-level tourist spots, 22 national important cultural relic protection units and four national none-substantial cultural relics. The famous scenic spots include Hemudu cultural relics with 7,000 years of civilization history, the oldest private building of book collection Tianyi Pavilion in China, Fenghua Xikou Jiang Jieshi's hometown (the hometown of Jiangkaishe in Fenghua Xikou), Tiantong Temple-the second in the five Zen mountains under heaven, Emperor Ashoka Temple which treasures up part of Sakyamuni, Elephant Mountain (Xiangshan) seashore holiday spot. East Qian Lake (Dong Qian Lake Resort), Tengtou (Village), Siming Mountain and so on. Ningbo lies in a strategic place- "Haitian Foguo" Putuo Mountain (Mount Pu Tuo) in the east, the beautiful Yandang Mountain under heaven in the south, the elegant West Lake of Hangzhou in the west, the international big city (metropolis) Shanghai in the north, which forms a natural and specific tourist route.
